The American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians are mindful of the tragic murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, and express our support for ending the longstanding injustices faced by Blacks in our country. We recognize that our under-represented minority patients, families, pediatricians, and trainees suffer microaggressions and racism that may have gone unnoticed or unacknowledged. We pledge to encourage, support, and provide training for our members to learn how to address these aggressions and treat our patients who suffer from related adverse childhood events.
We encourage our patients’ families to speak with their children about equality of all humans regardless of race, gender, sexual identity or orientation. This conversation can be challenging and scary, but your osteopathic pediatrician can be a helpful partner in discussing these topics.
We recognize that our under-represented minority physicians have a heavy burden placed on them to continue to treat their patients while dealing with these injustices. We see you and acknowledge your strength and determination to treat your patients with our unique osteopathic approach to pediatrics.
Together we will be the change that we want to see in our country and health care system.
