For the first time since 2012, the AAP has revised and released an updated version of their recommendations around breastfeeding and the use of human milk. Aligning more closely with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) and in response to the continued growth of literature supporting the use of an exclusive human milk diet to promote the best outcomes in infants, the statement now extends the period of recommended human milk to 2 years of age and beyond at the desire of the providing parent and the infant. The policy statement also calls for further work to improve the structural and social landscape surrounding breastfeeding and human milk feeding, including addressing implicit bias, systemic bias and continued barriers contributing to significant disparities in breastfeeding success among races, ethnicities, and socioeconomic classes.
